On Sequentially Normalized Maximum Likelihood Models

چکیده
The important normalized maximum likelihood (NML) distribution is obtained via a normalization over all sequences of given length. It has two short-comings: the resulting model is usually not a random process, and in many cases, the normalizing integral or sum is hard to compute. In contrast, the recently proposed sequentially normalized maximum likelihood (SNML) models always comprise a random process and are often much easier to compute. We present some results on SNML type models in the Markovian and linear–Gaussian model classes. In the linear–Gaussian case, the resulting sequentially normalized least squares (SNLS) model is particularly interesting. The associated sequentially minimized squared deviations are smaller than both the usual least squares and the squared prediction errors used in the so called predictive least squares (PLS) criterion. The SNLS model is asymptotically optimal within the given class of distributions by reaching the lower bound on the logarithmic prediction errors, given by the stochastic complexity, up to lower-order terms.

MATHEMATICAL ENGINEERING TECHNICAL REPORTS Improving on the Maximum Likelihood Estimators of the means in Poisson Decomposable Graphical Models
In this article we study the simultaneous estimation of the means in Poisson decomposable graphical models. We derive some classes of estimators which improve on the maximum likelihood estimator under the normalized squared losses. Our estimators are based on the argument in Chou[3] and shrink the maximum likelihood estimator depending on the marginal frequencies of variables forming a complete...
متن کاملModified Maximum Likelihood Estimation in First-Order Autoregressive Moving Average Models with some Non-Normal Residuals
When modeling time series data using autoregressive-moving average processes, it is a common practice to presume that the residuals are normally distributed. However, sometimes we encounter non-normal residuals and asymmetry of data marginal distribution. Despite widespread use of pure autoregressive processes for modeling non-normal time series, the autoregressive-moving average models have le...

In this paper, for the first time, the subject of change point estimation has been utilized in the stationary state of auto regressive moving average (ARMA) (1, 1). In the monitoring phase, in case the features of the question pursue a time series, i.e., ARMA(1,1), on the basis of the maximum likelihood technique, an approach will be developed for the estimation of the stationary state’s change...
متن کاملA comparison of algorithms for maximum likelihood estimation of Spatial GLM models
In spatial generalized linear mixed models, spatial correlation is assumed by adding normal latent variables to the model. In these models because of the non-Gaussian spatial response and the presence of latent variables the likelihood function cannot usually be given in a closed form, thus the maximum likelihood approach is very challenging. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce two n...
متن کاملEstimation of Unnormalized Statistical Models without Numerical Integration
Parametric statistical models of continuous or discrete valued data are often not properly normalized, that is, they do not integrate or sum to unity. The normalization is essential for maximum likelihood estimation. While in principle, models can always be normalized by dividing them by their integral or sum (their partition function), this can in practice be extremely difficult. We have been ...
